Case Study

Blue Peter at Cake International

Our client Cake International is the UK’s leading cake decorating, sugarcraft & baking show with an internationally renowned event each November at the NEC, Birmingham. When a ‘bite-sized’ version of the show was introduced, One Voice was challenged to promote it as a key event in the cake decorating and sugarcraft calendar. We pitched the show to Blue Peter, successfully securing a partnership with the TV show and creating a dedicated feature at Cake International on the theme of Blue Peter pets past and present. This was expertly crafted in advance by a team of cake decorators and the show presenter, Barney Harwood.

One Voice spent a day at Cake International with the Blue Peter crew accompanied by Barney to film the pets feature and interview key contributors. The film was broadcast on Blue Peter three weeks later.

Results:

  • Secured national TV coverage for Cake International
  • Promoted the show to a new generation of cake decorators and their parents
  • Created an audience friendly feature at Cake International which encouraged participation by visitors to the show

The InExeter Christmas light switch on event 2018

One Voice was tasked with developing a PR, digital & marketing comms plan to support the event with two key objectives; communicate a venue change and a change of day.

The aim was to:

  • Draw families from a wider catchment into Exeter;
  • Encourage families to enjoy, explore and discover the city centre over a full day;
  • Raise footfall during the full Sunday trading day enabling all areas of the city to benefit;
  • Add to the Christmas in Exeter proposition: Thursday Cathedral Christmas Market opening, Friday Christmas Grotto launch, Saturday Guildhall and Sunday, InExeter celebration.

Activity included:

  • Preparing and issuing press releases to local, regional & broadcast media about the event
  • Generate unique and engaging content for the digital platforms 
  • Identify and buy advertising space in key media 

The event was a great success for the city with One Voice generating some strong results.

The Creative Craft Show

A firm favourite for any craft lover’s calendar, the Creative Craft Show exhibits in key cities across the UK bringing the latest craft, quality and haberdashery supplies to keen crafters.

2018 marked the twin centenaries of World War 1 and Women getting the Vote. To commemorate these two important events, the Creative Craft Show teamed up with knitting fanatics Grans on the Make to make a giant 13ft wall hanging made from over 2,500 knitted and crocheted sections. 

The feature was created by over 2,000 individuals who knitted or crocheted 4-inch squares and flowers at the Creative Craft Show as it has toured the UK throughout the year, with local knitting groups contributing by post too. The giant poppy crafted from 1568 squares, one for each day of the First World War, was a hand-made dedication to the missing in action and those who fell or died of their injuries. The corresponding panel with its border of over 1000 crocheted and knitted flowers was the centenary tribute to those who fought successfully for women’s right to vote. 

One Voice’s challenge was to raise awareness of the feature throughout the year and to support its unveiling later in the year. This was achieved through broadcast, nationl and consumer media outreach.

Engaging with bloggers and micro influencers

As part of our PR and marketing campaign for Stitching, Sewing & Hobbycrafts, a large craft show held at the NEC in Birmingham by our client ICHF Events, One Voice regularly works with key bloggers and micro influencers. In 2017, we hosted a dedicated blogger event at the show with workshops, brunch, a goodie bag and tickets to the rest of the show.

Results:

  • 14 key craft bloggers attended the show, some for the very first time
  • Previews and reviews written by our invitees extended our online PR and reached an audience of dedicated craft enthusiasts
  • Bloggers posted to social media before, during and after the show
  • Bloggers provided invaluable feedback about the show for our client
