Creative solutions to marketing a city

Challenged by Exeter Business Improvement District to market Exeter ‘beyond the High Street’, One Voice crafted a marketing strategy focusing on the vibrant independent quarters of the city, championing the city’s diverse businesses.   We commissioned designers at Believe In and web developers at Illicit to create a brand and a comprehensive website, which allowed each BID business to have a content-rich presence on the web as part of a city directory.  We created a city centre map and directory in which every business was included. We worked with three photographers to capture the independent sector and we launched the Exeter Summer of Independents, which saw an independent gift shop crowned Exeter’s independent business of the year.


  • Created a layered marketing campaign, utilising print, digital, broadcast and outdoor channels to reach an audience within 1.5 hours of Exeter
  • 10,000 city centre maps distributed to residents and tourists staying within a 1 hour drive of Exeter
  • 300 independent businesses showcased on the website
  • Independent business’ pages consistently rank in Top 10 most visited pages on website
  • 1,658 votes for Exeter’s independent business of the year
  • 117 businesses engaged with campaign
